Open letter to stop feeding factory farms #FoodNotFeed

We, the undersigned, join the global call for our governments to end the world’s biggest hidden food waste by cutting the use of food crops in factory farming. This waste is not only costing the planet and causing animal suffering, it is also wasting public money. We urge governments to prioritize food for people, not for factory farms.

In the United States, approximately 200 million tons of grain—including corn, wheat, and barley crops fit for human consumption—are fed to factory-farmed animals each year. Because animals convert these crops very inefficiently into meat, milk and eggs, this results in 160 million tons of food lost annually—enough to feed 288 million people. Meanwhile, 1 in 7 American households face food insecurity, representing over 47 million Americans including 13.8 million children. This waste of nutritious food crops is subsidized by taxpayers, with 30% of farm subsidies supporting feed crops while only 4% support fruits and vegetables. This is a waste we cannot afford, and it's time for policies that put feeding people first.

That is why we are calling for a Food, Not Feed plan with feed reduction at its core. By cutting the use of grain and soy for factory farms, we can free up resources, including public funds, to put more healthy and affordable food on people’s plates and support farming systems that give animals good lives.

Together, we can build a fairer, more sustainable food system—one that feeds people, protects animals, and safeguards our planet for future generations.

Policymakers must prioritize food for people, not feed for factory farms. #FoodNotFeed

Governments must stop feeding factory farms

American taxpayers spend billions subsidizing corn and soy that feeds factory farms instead of people.

While 47 million Americans face food insecurity, we waste enough grain feeding animals to feed 200 million people.

Will you add your name to the international open letter and our letter to U.S. policymakers? Help us send a clear message about the need for food system reform.
