The chicken industry has a secret.

It’s been hidden from consumers behind factory farm doors for years. But now the problem has gotten so bad, you can actually see it on supermarket shelves.

Disturbingly dubbed “spaghetti meat” by scientists, this disgusting phenomenon now appearing in chickens stems from selectively breeding birds to grow so massive, so quickly, they can barely support their own weight.

This dangerously fast growth has disastrous animal welfare consequences: Chickens often struggle to walk and can suffer from leg deformities, respiratory problems, and heart attacks. Even worse, they may be in chronic pain from the time they are just two weeks old—pain that is associated with degenerative muscle disorders.

Spaghetti meat—much like its equally nasty cousin, white striping—is a direct result of those muscle disorders. And the bad news for consumers: The meat resulting from chickens who suffer from these disorders is associated with less protein and higher fat.

Say no

Sign your name to tell food companies that the pain and suffering caused by these degenerative muscle disorders is unacceptable.

From our experiences sitting in boardrooms with some of the biggest names in the food industry, we can tell you this: Food companies know that fast growth is a problem. But many have told us directly that they won’t commit to healthier genetics until customers tell them that enough is enough.

Now’s your chance to take a stand by adding your name your name to our growing list of supporters demonstrating demand for healthier genetics for chickens. Because when you raise your voice, food companies listen—and millions of animals benefit.

Special thanks to Path8 and Peridot Rose Productions.
